Before taking up art professionally, Christine had a career in education, as a linguist, lecturer and education manager before training as a sculptor at Winchester School of Art.
She creates abstract works in stainless steel, powder coated steel and other media. The pieces on display reflect the main themes of her recent work and are part of her series exploring aspects of time and change over time.
The Time's Arrow/Time's Cycle pieces were inspired by the question of whether time is mono-directional and history a series of unique events, or whether it is cyclical. This is not just in the Buddhist sense of reincarnation, but of cyclical events in the world around us. For example, the forming and reforming of natural features on earth, the ebb and flow of the tides and the movement of planets as they follow paths which are often round or elliptical, swinging away and then returning. The dart-like and round or oval shapes, which were her starting point, reflect this dichotomy.
The Kairos series relate to the Greek concept of the right or appropriate time for doing something, the opportune moment, of carpe diem, to seize the moment to act and change our circumstances.
Christine has exhibited widely and her sculptures are in private collections in many parts of the UK.
"My work references the human experience - life is a process of development and change. We start out as a blank sheet, a tabula rasa and our life experience changes us, so that we become more complex but much more interesting. We may start out at one point and end up somewhere entirely different and yet it is possible to trace the path we took and why. Our lives may seem to be mapped out for us, yet we have the ability to seize an opportunity when one presents itself and we can thus change circumstances to our advantage".
